Commodity Fetishism at Square Street Gallery
Let’s start with a quote by Karl Marx, shall we?
“The things which until then had been communicated, but never exchanged, given, but never sold, acquired, but never bought – virtue, love, conscience – all at last enter into commerce”.
Sounds pretty contemporary. The inevitability of this process had lead to the unavoidable alienation and simplification.
Charming as it is “I, Pencil” by Leonard E. Read mentions the same processes: we consume things—objects, services and experiences—without not even understanding but without a mere thought of their origin and the efforts needed for their creation. All our appreciation, emotions and gratitude are now poured into commodities themselves, not so much in the sourced materials, technologies used and people involved. Is there any glimpse of hope for us, obsessed human beings? Hey, that’s an art exhibition; it gives food for thought not answers. But go visit it and try to catch curator @everhadpie, he will tell you so much more.
