“Sonic Transitions: Auditory Stories of Female New Immigrants in Hong Kong” is a sound art exhibition exploring how female new immigrant artists use sound to express personal auditory narratives intertwined with urban life.

The exhibition features 10 new works created by 12 artists. Using sound as the primary medium, these works transform auditory memories into artistic expressions, presenting a rich array of cultural and emotional narratives.

Focusing on “transition,” the exhibition examines female mobility, listening, and sonic expression in public spaces. The artworks simulate the flow and intersection of sonic elements across shifting contexts, constructing a dynamic auditory space for continuous dialogue where the works of female artists intertwine, allowing sound to wander and flow through the space. This fosters invisible exchanges and interactions, forming a multi-layered network of sonic narratives.

Prior registration is required 2 days in advance.

Closing Artist Talk for ‘The Embrace and the Passage’ at Para Site

As the unfolding exhibition draws to a close, the four artists gather to reflect on their worksand discuss how they engage with host-guest dynamics as a framework for healing.Navigating through place-making and live happenings, they tend to personal andcollective traumas. The conversation will also delve into their approaches to dialogical art-making—how exchanges shape their practices and give rise to fluid, evolving relationships. As boundaries shift and roles dissolve, the discussion considers: when boundaries aredisrupted, can the guest gain power, and can the host be liberated? We invite all audiencesalong the way to take part in this reflection and sharing.

PORTALS is the final commissioned work of ‘The Embrace and the Passage’, concluding the exhibition’s dialogue on shifting host-guest dynamics. This site-specific performanceinvites audiences to traverse both material and symbolic portals within the space through collective rituals.

Leading up to the performance, the artist hosted workshops in Hong Kong where participants crafted figurines that form a shared, transcendent presence along her own embodiment, Vera Maningning, whose name means ‘the light of truth.’ Clad in white lace—a motif resonant in both Filipino households and Western rituals—she inhabits this figure to embody a spectrum of fluid identities. At the performance, through singing, shapeshifting, and healing practices inspired by pre- and postcolonial Filipino shamanism, she casts the foreign, trans body as a sanctuary of queer struggle and survival, overcomingthe imposed borders of geography and power that continue to shape our world.

Participants are encouraged to bring a personally significant object to join the artist during the performance.

Microwave International New Media Art Festival

A multitude of people, and yet a solitude!”

—Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

What is the difference between loneliness and solitude? For centuries, numerous writers and thinkers have contemplated these two states. To French philosopher and author Albert Camus, loneliness is always accompanied by estrangement and anxiety. In Six Lectures on Solitude, painter and writer Chiang Hsun defines solitude as synonymous with departure or withdrawal from a group, a category, or a parameter, which requires a candid understanding of oneself. Being alone and feeling lonely are distinct experiences: being alone is a choice often made to have a sense of inner peace, while feeling lonely evokes sadness from being excluded against your will. It is intriguing how a touch of sentimentality can prompt reflection on these nuances. Emotions unravel like numerous illusory threads—intricate and universally experienced. To deepen our understanding of how we feel when we are alone, we can turn to cultural historian Fay Bound Alberti’s A Biography of Loneliness. In the book, she argues loneliness is not a universal or ahistorical phenomenon, and that “oneliness” has long been regarded as a precious moment to seek inner peace or communion with God. However, as religion declined and society rapidly industrialized in the nineteenth century, “loneliness” emerged as a term and soon connoted the negative experience of alienation between individuals. Similarly, with the advancement of science and technology, society has shifted its focus from the group to the individual, giving rise to a contemporary loneliness. This exhibition does not aim to study the history of human emotions, but to explore the relationship between emotions and scientific and technological development. If the Industrial Revolution served as a catalyst for loneliness (as Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist shows), how has this dynamic evolved in our current world?

M+ Matters: Cantonese Art and Plural Modernities

Why did Guangdong artists establish some of the most radical news pictorials in China in the early 20th century? How did they adapt the elegant poetics of Chinese painting to represent the realities of modern warfare or to satirise society? How do their innovations continue to shape the way we see?

This public symposium will shed new light on Guangdong's distinctive contributions to Chinese artistic modernism and its place within the current discourses of regional and multiple modernities. Leading experts from universities and museums in Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen will consider such topics as the varieties of realism in 20th-century Guangdong painting; the social circulation of images, especially pictorials, woodblock prints, and cartoons; and the propagation of the Lingnan School in Hong Kong and the Cantonese diaspora. The symposium will be conducted in Cantonese and Mandarin, with simultaneous interpretation available in English.

Countering Time: In Conversation with Lee Weng Choy, Simon Leung, Gala Porras-Kim, and Merve Ünsal at Asia Art Archive

Join us for a conversation about the immeasurability of time with Lee Weng Choy, Simon Leung, Gala Porras-Kim, and Merve Ünsal—four artists and writers who have created new work for AAA’s upcoming exhibition, Countering Time.

How does time resist precise measurement? How does it counter and elude while remaining numbered at the same time? This conversation invites the participating artists and writers to discuss ideas of archival time, impermanence, ghosts, and artistic speculation. They speak about their own artworks as well as personal and shared references, including films and poems.

This event marks the opening of Countering Time, an exhibition featuring new works by Lee Weng Choy, Simon Leung, Gala Porras-Kim, and Merve Ünsal. Ünsal uses her body to record a centuries-old sinkhole where human and geological time collapse. Leung bends and folds the afterlives of a moment captured in a 1967 photograph from Hong Kong. Porras-Kim traces recollections of lost works and archives. Lee uses personal annotations to mark time. Together, they tune in, refract, exhume, and annotate artworks, archival records, and past events, demonstrating how archives are sites of imagination instead of final resting places of historical records.

M+ The Art of Fashion: In Conversation with Guo Pei, Ikko Yokoyama, and Desiree Au

As one of China’s first generation of fashion designers, Guo Pei has expressed her dream for beauty through her endeavour in couture art over the last three decades. She melds historic Chinese craftsmanship with diverse cultural inspirations and haute couture. Her garments are not merely wearable sculptures but mirrors that reflect the rapid economic development in China, the pursuit for material pleasure and technical heights, and the universal hunger for spectacle. The Special Exhibition Guo Pei: Fashioning Imaginationpairs Guo’s pioneering vision with artworks in the M+ Collection that also speak to the same cosmopolitan modernist approaches and references in visual art and culture during the post-1980 period.

Join Guo Pei, M+ Lead Curator of Design and Architecture Ikko Yokoyama, and Vogue Hong Kong founding publisher Desiree Au for a discussion on the relationship between fashion, art, and design, and how through the development of the exhibition this relationship is explored.
