Trendi Club: New Paintings by Wilson Shieh and Tse Yim On at Bonhams

Every generation has its memory, every culture has its unique traits.

What so called ‘trend’ has always been a symbol in history to be developed into a cultural characteristic pertaining to a particular era. Trends are constantly changing, and being changed by celebrities and artists who could provoke forms of reformation amongst the public, hence creating a new trend within a culture in that era. Such inconsistency forbit a certain trend to last forever, yet it also left a mark on every generation who’s been through the trends of their era. To people who have experienced their own golden ages, trends serve like a trademark in their heart instead of what was just simply being put in a report or paragraph.

Wilson Shieh and Tse Yim On are two same aged friends who witnessed the development of trends in the golden age of Hong Kong. The topic on how to incorporate Pop Culture reference on traditional medium uses had always been a constant discussion topic amongst themselves. Such discussion continues until even now after they graduated and tread on separate path of development.

TRENDI CLUB: New paintings by Wilson Shieh and Tse Yim On exhibition hosted by Bonhams serves as a reunion for Wilson and On. The similarities they discovered while reviewing each other’s works lead to this collaboration that enables them to demonstrate each, and both of their works.

The collection, named REdiscovery: Manfred Schoeni’s Legacy, is built by the late Manfred Ludwig Schoeni (1946 – 2004), a great advocate for the Chinese Contemporary Art movement. Fifteen paintings, including some of the finest examples, tell the story of a trailblazing generation of Chinese contemporary art that came to the forefront of the global art stage in the 1990s and 2000s. Headlining the sale is Mask 2000 No. 3 by Zeng Fanzhi. A museum-quality work coming fresh to the market in more than 20 years, the painting features one of the most recognisable symbols in Chinese Contemporary Art: the mask. Deborah Brown: Silent Shadows at Bonhams

Deborah Brown: Silent Shadows at Bonhams

From 16 March to 6 April and in celebration of Hong Kong Arts Month, Bonhams presents Deborah Brown: Silent Shadows, a selling exhibition of the latest painting series by the US-based contemporary artist Deborah Brown, in partnership with the art advisory, Arodite. The exhibition showcases 23 works of oil on canvas and panels, revealing the artist's take on the everyday beauty in her native neighbourhood of New York and Los Angeles, through an adventurous play with light, colour and shadow.

Inspired by the daily walks with her dog, Brown conveys a visually and emotionally refreshing perspective to the otherwise taken-for-granted habitual surroundings, using a palette of heightened colours and abbreviated brushwork. The artist, seemingly absent from the picture, presents herself in elongated shadows connected by a leash to a canine companion. The figures are found passing in front of a variety of landscapes drawn from the artist's past and present, from Brooklyn, New York, where she lives and works, to Southern California where she grew up. They slant up across buildings and streets, transforming prosaic spaces into snippets of wonderlands where viewers are placed in the role of protagonist, experiencing the visual, emotional, and psychological reality of the everyday beauty as the artist sees it.

Eric So: The Storyteller at Bonhams Hong Kong

From 1 – 21 September, Bonhams Hong Kong presents Eric So: The Storyteller, a selling exhibition of a new painting series by the Hong Kong artist. All works from the show are fresh-to-market and are never-before-seen in public.

The exhibition showcases more than 30 works of acrylic on canvas, each representing the silhouette of a well-known cartoon or anime character. But just when viewers begin to seek the visual details to confirm the character’s identity, one will find – and only find – anything but the clues that they need.

Instead, what they see is the rear of the work painted in ultra-realism: the exposed back frame, the stretcher, and the many labels. This exhibition tells not only the story of these famous characters, but also of our own memory, experience, and emotions with them – we are our own storyteller.

Gallery address: Suite 2001, One Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty

Wang Su: Rebirth at Bonhams

Bonhams Hong Kong are delighted to present Rebirth, a solo exhibition of works by contemporary artist Wang Su. ✨

The exhibition will showcase 15 works by Wang Su. As a landscape painter who lives between China and Greece, Wang's exuberant works explore her relationship with nature through a shared sense of the sacred and symbolic. The natural world sits at the very heart of Wang's paintings, as she passionately explores her relationship with her surroundings. With vivid colours, symmetry and rich layers, Wang gives her subjects a sense of symbolism, pointing toward nature’s mysterious laws.

Bestowing vitality to all living creatures through romantic and exuberant depictions, Wang's works conjure a sense of déjà vu whilst never depicting a specific scene.

When pop art landed in Japan, where the kawaii culture originated as a cult and developed into a mainstream aesthetic, it found itself a cuter identity: one of innocence and fantasy dressed in loveable vibrant pastel colours – the Kawaii Pop. Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami have a firm grip on the kawaii pop crown, and are the pioneers who successfully exported it to the global contemporary art scene. Not only that, they have also inspired a younger generation of Kawaii Pop artists who push new boundaries of this genre. These young artists, such as Ayako Rokkaku, Aya Takano, Hikari Shimoda, and Takeru Amano, are among the names whose works will be showcased at Bonhams Modern and Contemporary Art Sale in Hong Kong on 26 May 2022.

The exhibition will showcase 48 works depicting the picturesque scenery of Hong Kong's landmark long-distance hiking trail. The acrylic paintings and works on paper mark the first time Stephen Wong has chronicled his journeys along the MacLehose Trail as a standalone series. An avid hiker, Wong sketched the sights en routeand subsequently re-envisioned them on canvas; the volatility of memory constitutes the most personal manifestation of the artist’s unique expression.
