Gallery Ascend is thrilled to present "In Limbo," a mesmerizing solo exhibition by the highly acclaimed Korean artist, So Youn Lee. Lee's first-ever exhibition in Hong Kong will be on view at The Arca, 43 Heung Yip Road, Wong Chuk Hang.
Lee's artworks challenge traditional notions of human existence and delve into the invisible aspects of being human. Through her depictions of human beings as voyagers and aliens searching for their place in the universe, Lee's artwork centers on themes of individuality, authenticity, and the quest for self-discovery in an unpredictable world.
Her figures are metamorphic and metaphysical, reflecting how one's environment influences how they perceive themselves and the world. "In Limbo" explores themes of the afterlife and love. The exhibition draws inspiration from Lee's personal experience of losing her beloved dog, Choco, and the ensuing grief that led her to contemplate ideas of mythology and science fiction. The artwork creates a narrative around a new universe and planet where loved ones now reside in an eternal realm. In this new world, Choco serves as a proxy for the beloved, arriving in a new world that is just a vast emptiness of space filled with potential yet unrealized. The exhibition features a body of artwork that grapples with themes of despair, karma, weakness of mind, desire, and reincarnation. It is both mystic and moody, yet familiar and beautiful.
The artworks on display in "In Limbo" employ diverse media, such as oil and acrylic paints, ceramic sculptures, and digital media, such as 3D and digital paintings, to push the limits of her art and highlight the fluidity and progression of the human experience.
