Lee Jinju: No Ground at Yuz Flow Art Space
Uncanny but strangely comforting paintings that evoke bizarre yet familiar dream logic.
For the paintings to be that detailed the artist has to be engaged in the act of seeing to the point of being overly observant. I think this is what attracted me the most: the visual proof that the artist was that present to notice and perceive all the veins of the hand, all the ash on the snow, all the lichen on the rocks. Blending these observations with memories, symbols and thoughts creates eerie, unfathomable worlds.
The Black Paintings look almost instructional, which is both mesmerizing and soothing. The black pigment, used for creating that velvet void, is called Leejeongbae black and it was created by artist’s husband, artist Lee Jeong-bae.
