Lee Jin Woo at White Cube
Oh the horror in the eyes of all who were present when the artist scratched his artwork! To be fair after the numerous applications of hanji paper and charcoal, the repeated rubbing and beating with a metal brush— these thick multilayered paintings are indeed quite sturdy. From a distance they look like abstracted rainy landscapes, up close they remind me of tree bark or a crust of dried soil. And of course the main focus in the process of their creation is erasing the ego of the creator and continuation of the ritualistic repetition that is associated with Dansaekhwa.
