Transcendence at Sansiao Gallery

Sansiao Gallery HK and the exhibition organizer Chun Poon jointly present “Transcendence,” an exhibition featuring the latest works by contemporary artists Taku Hisamura, Huo Yun, and Damon Tong. Despite their diverse backgrounds, all three artists use everyday materials—such as textiles, paper, and stickers— as their medium. By breathing new life into familiar items, their works prompt a reconsideration of how we understand and engage with society and the physical world around us. By redefining the ordinary, these works prompt us to reconsider what we know and how we perceive. This exploration aligns with Carl Jung’s concept of “The Transcendent Function,” which describes the psychic process that arises from the tension between consciousness and the unconscious, fostering psychological growth through their integration.

Sansiao Gallery HK and the exhibition organizer Chun Poon are delighted to present “Mandala,” a group exhibition featuring recent works by five Hong Kong-based artists: Sam Cheng, Jess Leung, Fung Chim, Victor Chu, and Damon Tong.

A mandala, which depicts a circle enclosing a square, symbolizes the universe in the Hindu and Buddhist religions. It is often used as a focus during meditation, signifying a spiritual journey through layers starting from the outer periphery to the inner core. For instance, the creation of Tibetan sand mandala can take days or even weeks. Several monks collaborate to meticulously place colorful powdered sand onto a surface, while they pray and meditate. Each grain of sand represents a blessing.

Artists: Sam Cheng, Jess Leung, Fung Chim, Victor Chu, Damon Tong

Stephanie Sin: Rehoboam at Sansiao Gallery

Sansiao Gallery HK and independent art consultant Chun Poon are delighted to present "Rehoboam", a solo exhibition featuring recent works by Hong Kong based artist Stephanie Sin. Her latest series, which centers on home furnishings, leads us on a journey exploring online shopping behaviors of humans.

Rapid strides in AI (Artificial Intelligence) now see such insights widely applied, with organizations racing to build big data-related services. Many believe AI will bring prosperity, propelling our lives towards a promising future. The expectation is that AI will eventually understand us more and serve us better than we do ourselves. Perhaps it already does when we are shopping or browsing online, before we are even aware of them. Consider this: when was the last time you were surprised to see ads and suggested posts aligned perfectly with your interests?

Today, online shopping feels as if we are purchasing from an imagined future. In this virtual marketplace, we often come across flowers in artificial colors, bearing surreal hues that push the boundaries of imagination. It is common to find a piece of furniture that we need a manual to understand its purpose and function. Even more astonishingly, the inconceivable is made plausible – imagine having a bathtub by a window that offers a panoramic riverside view over a hill, a luxury most of us can only dream of. Yet, the online shopping experience presents such fantasies as achievable realities. The process is so seamless that we may not even bother to question if these needs are genuinely ours, or simply suggestions implanted by AI.

Master and Apprentice at Sansiao Gallery HK

Master and Apprentice at Sansiao Gallery HK

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Sansiao Gallery HK and guest curator Chun Poon are pleased to announce their upcoming exhibition “Master and Apprentice”. The exhibition showcases the works by Hong Kong-born American photographer Tseng Kwong Chi and American photographer Christopher Makos from the Sansiao Gallery collection, and unveils new works by the Hong Kong visual artist Rachel Ip.

In theory of master-apprentice relationship, master represents the establishment - matters that are defined, secured and certain; apprentice symbolises revolution - matters that are open to interpretation, mutable and uncertain.  This uncertainty, however, breeds changes and innovations. Master offers experiences and knowledge to apprentice, and apprentice creates experiments and new ideas.

When photography was introduced in the early 19th century, many people thought painting would be dead soon.  However, painting has instead evolved philosophically and transformed aesthetically throughout the modern era to the contemporary days.  The new technology of photography encouraged innovation and creativity in the traditional art form of painting, with both art forms blooming since then.  This is not that an apprentice must replace a master, but it is possible for both to develop together.  This development demonstrates a fascinating concept of master-apprentice relationship: by bringing togetherthe inherited knowledge and experience from a master and innovations of an apprentice, this will evolve into something completely new.

Contemporary: Figurative at Sansiao Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Sansiao Gallery HK is excited to bring together selected works from the gallery collection by prestigious painters – Walasse Ting, Makoto Saito, Wayne Thiebaud, Masaru Shichinohe, and Ken Matsuyama. With an eclectic collection of masterpieces from the East and the West, the exhibition “Contemporary: Figurative” explores the consciousness of expressing oneself and the collective self from post 20th-century up to contemporary in figurative paintings.

The figurative tradition can be observed since the era of Classical Greek sculptures, balancing ideal geometry with reasonable realism. Throughout the centuries, its evolution has steadily broadened its parameters from the early Renaissance, the Baroque, to Impressionism. The term “figurativism” came in the mid-20th century, which is often described as a contrast to the emergence of abstract art. It refers to artworks such as paintings and sculptures that hold references to the real world and particularly to the human figure. Returning to the principles of figurative art with experiences of the men as of primary importance, the contemporaries have their own approaches forming their artistic languages, expressive or even deformative.

Group exhibition 2022 at Sansiao Gallery

Group exhibition 2022 at Sansiao Gallery

We are delighted to present “2022”, a group exhibition that brings together new works by Hong Kong artists Muses Sze Mei Ting, King Lau, Iris Tsang, Stephanie Sin and Fung Chim in response to “2022”. When we started planning the exhibition in 2020, the topic “2022” was ambiguous to the artists. As vague and uncertain as it might be, it offers artists limitless space to imagine what it can relate to.

What does 2022 mean to you? The process of exhibition planning reminds us of how we try to forecast or imagine an unknown future. This vision represents an attainable hope, assuming it is a hope of a better future. The five artists, working with different mediums, responded to the topic “2022” as varied as their distinctive artistic practices.

Participating Artists: Muses Sze Mei Ting, King Lau, Iris Tsang, Stephanie Sin, Fung Chim

Guest Curator: Chun Poon
