The flower-and-bird paintings of the Song Dynasty are famous for their exquisiteness, realism and vividness. People in the Song Dynasty paid attention to observing nature and pursued artistic effects that had both form and spirit. In the flower-and-bird paintings of the Song Dynasty, whether they are blooming flowers, flying butterflies, perching birds, or swimming fish, they are all depicted vividly and vividly. These works not only show the beauty of nature, but also convey people's love for life and awe of nature.

Trailing Clouds of Glory at Oi Ling Art Gallery

Trailing Clouds of Glory at Oi Ling Art Gallery

For French May Arts Festival 2024, Oi Ling Art Gallery has selected 4 outstanding local Hong Kong Chinese artists whose artworks focus on the subject matter of identity, origin, and the quest to find the meaning to life - ideas and philosophies previously explored by several of the French Impressionist artists, indeed both Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

Both Fan Hong Bin and Tian Yan Hua are grounded in traditional Chinese ink techniques but have developed non-traditional colour schemes to help them express their spiritual thoughts on religion and ways to find inner peace.

Wing Chan and Cassian Lau by contrast, have an entirely different orientation. Wing Chan is a photographer. He uses his camera to capture the dynamic and different nuances of urban society. He then creates montages that speak beyond the aesthetic but also show the various rhythms and landscapes of an urban society. Similarly, Cassian Lau uses his art to comment on the different phenomena he observes in the modern world. Often his attention is drawn to the hypocrisy and shallowness of a society that focuses too much on materialism.  He uses black outlines, exaggeration and words to augment his artworks. His work is colourful, decorative, fun, and comedic.

In 2018, Chan Sai-lok launched his cultural identity series with red as the main motif, then had two solo exhibitions, “Land of Longing and Exile” (2019) and “Everyday Practice” (2020), and undertook residencies in New York and Denmark. Now, as a kind of postscript to his red series, he has invited three of his friends to join him in interpreting contemporary ink aesthetics.

The curatorial framework appropriates the traditional genres of poetry, calligraphy, painting, seal carving and objects. Chan sees text and literature as materials for creation. Not restricted to readable text, poetry can be purely a sequence of text, alternating rhythms or abstract formations. Fabric and silk are colours with which painting weaves narrative layers like a novel. Chui Pui-chee has had a long calligraphy practice. Man and brush move as one entity, creating the essence of his ink practice.

Participating artist: CHUI Pui-chee, LAU Hok-shing, PAU Mo-ching, CHAN Sai-lok

Cang Yuan: Truth in Distortion at Oi Ling Antiques

“Truth in Distortion” marks French-based Chinese artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. The artist’s goal to express the meaning of this world through painting is a timeless endeavor.  To Cang Yuan, to express meaning is to first understand the tensions and variables that have shaped him—factors such as his Chinese heritage and his move to the West, the weighty emphasis on realism in the Soviet-style art education of his youth, and its clash with the contemporary art scenes in Paris.  “Truth in Distortion” is a collection that explores the artist’s journey to resolve the contentions that he has felt in his artistic life, with the resolution that there is perhaps no inherent conflict between seemingly opposing dualities after all.  For Cang, in abstraction there is reality, in distortion there is truth.  Abstraction—whether in dramatization, reduction, exaggeration, distillation—is a form that allows the experience of life to be understood. Abstraction is but life’s complex hues on canvas.
