Hongkong Land is proud to present Transcending the Gongbi Tradition: Contemporary Hong Kong Fine-Brush Painters, a presentation curated by Dr Chen Fong-fong that brings together nine established and emerging local artists (listed in alphabetical order by surname): Brian Chan Kwan-lok, Sam Cheng Tan-shan, Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai, Eunice Cheung Wai-man, Barbara Choi Tak-yee, Sue Lai Kwan-ting, Jess Leung Lai-man, Joey Leung Ka-yin and Wilson Shieh Ka-ho. The 31 works by these nine artists recreated landscapes, flowers, birds and figures through traditionalgongbi painting techniques, showcasing a dynamic interpretation of the city’s cultural symbols.

Transcending the Gongbi Tradition encourages local practices of traditional fine-brush paintings while reflecting on the development of gongbi from its peak to present. It explores the integration of new and traditional forms as well as the rejuvenation of traditional gongbi through experimentation with new subjects, presentations and artistic thinking. Short videos of two participating artists demonstrating thegongbi technique with bird-and-flower paintings will be screened. In addition, for visitors who are curious about the equipment used in this delicate art medium, a toolbox containing brushes, Chinese ink and pigments favoured by gongbi artists will also be showcased.
