Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sotheby’s in Asia, this spring season Sotheby’s Hong Kong will bring an extraordinary series of evening auctions on 5 April including modern and contemporary art and a special cross-category luxury sales titled The Exceptionals. Headlining the evening will be the auction debut of a spectacular masterpiece by Zhang Daqian, painted in 1973, the very same year Sotheby’s Hong Kong established its permanent presence in the region.
Exemplifying the incredible role Sotheby’s has taken in the collection journeys of many discerning collectors building great legacies, Chinese Works of Art will present five single-owner sales – the most ever seen in a single sale series. Among them, The Legacy of HIRANO KOTOKEN presents a beautiful collection of Song ceramics acquired in the last 20 years by Ryoichi Hirano; A Timeless Ode to Spring: The Dr Alice Cheng Falangcai Bowl offers a magnificent gem of imperial porcelain, and one which ranks among the most legendary pieces ever to have been offered at auction; and lastly, Treasured by the Yongle Emperor: The T.Y. Chao Blue and White Ewer presents a unique masterpiece from the Yongle period of imperial porcelain, commissioned for the personal use of the Emperor, and which has not been seen in public view since 1987, when it graced the cover of the T.Y. Chao auction catalogue.
Venue address: Hall 1, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wanchai
