Over the Influence is excited to announce the solo debut exhibition of Jack Kabangu at the Hong Kong gallery location. It is the artist’s first show with the international gallery. Titled borgerkrigen (The Civil War) the show is a collection of new paintings that hold a personal significance to the artist. The exhibition is on view from 9 September to 22 October 2022.
“I wanted the title to be borgerkrigen (The Civil War) to make an exhibition of works that is more personal to me. I am from DR Congo but have been born in Zambia and became and adult in Denmark. The Civil War in Congo have had a huge impact on my life as a child of refugees. My intensions with the exhibition is to express the meeting and mix of the different cultures and the impact it has had”, he said. A self-taught artist, his visual language is a combination of his African cultural roots complimented with his Danish sensibility. Within the paintings light and shadows harmonize amidst a vibrant colour palette that emphasizes the solitude of the figures inhabiting each composition: they are a master of their own universe. The external landscape is a visual play of the internal psychosis that makes up the figures shown in each work. For Kabangu this connection is primal and goes back to the origins of mankind—energy is the essence of breath, body, and daily interactions.
