Over the Influence Hong Kong is delighted to present Immortal Gaze, a highly anticipated exhibition featuring the series of paintings and works on paper by Japanese artist Azuki Furuya. This is the artist’s first comprehensive presentation with the gallery and her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.
Born and raised in Sapporo, Japan, Furuya received her MFA at Brooklyn College in 2019 after studying arts in Tokyo and London where she had embarked on a journey of self- exploration, developed a profound interest in her own culture and history, particularly the Ainu people of her homeland. With her extraordinary talent and artistic vision, she goes beyond conventional boundaries, skilfully encapsulating the essence of the Ainu people’s remarkable historical legacy. Through her works of art, Furuya strives to depict the rich cultural tapestry of the Ainu people, paying homage to their traditions, beliefs, and way of living.
Immortal Gaze is the visual gateway of the tribes around the world, showcasing their distinctive traditions and cultures. Furuya collected various elements and create a harmonious blend that highlights the tribe’s identity and beauty. The body of her works acknowledges the brightness of life and the fragility of existence; the materials serve as a form of narration cultivating stories that resonates with the audience.
