Sean Scully at Ben Brown Fine Arts

I remember seeing online one of the paintings by Sean Scully years ago and being puzzled—what’s all the fuss about, they are just yet another grid abstract paintings, don’t we have enough of them already? And then I finally saw one in real life. Yes, yes, I know, you’ve heard that before a million times, but they are different in real life, I swear! Layers of paint and texture make them look like glowing stained glass and up close some of them look like landscapes.
