Tomoo Gokita + Sanya Kantarovsky: Hanga at SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery

Tomoo Gokita + Sanya Kantarovsky: Hanga at SHOP Taka Ishii Gallery

Small terminology note: “hanga” stands for “print” in Japanese. Traditionally ukiyo-e and later more modern shin-hanga (new print) relied on a labour division, where an artist, a carver, and a printer were all doing their part of a work. Sōsaku-hanga, on the other hand, was a printmaking movement where artists were doing all the parts of the process by themselves. Now when you know this curious but probably unnecessary bit of information you can go and see those prints and appreciate the skills and techniques.
