Sherrie Levine: Hong Kong Dominoes at David Zwirner
Ah, what a joy to see exhibition by the straight-from-your-art-history-textbook artist. Purely conceptual exploration of ideas of ownership, copying, authorship, appropriation and authority. Sherrie Levine’s works always make me remember "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote" by Jorge Luis Borges.
If a photograph is a snap of reality — who owns it and doesn’t it mean that by re-photographing you are making your own, fully original work? If you are changing the material of the object into say the noble bronze aren’t you raising it now to the art object level? If you repeat someone’s artwork keeping in mind different idea does it change interpretation of the work? Obviously it’s up to the viewer to decide.
Exhibition period: 4.09 — 13.10.21
