Raoul De Keyser: Replay Again at David Zwirner
Let me be honest with you: this is exactly the type of exhibition I rarely recommend to see—chances are you won’t like it and it will leave you either frustrated or annoyed. Reading press releases usually isn’t very helpful: art writers seem to save all the words like ‘mimesis’, ‘oeuvre’, ‘transversal’ just for this occasion to squeeze as much of them as possible in their texts.
But is it a good exhibition? Yes. If you love Raoul De Keyser. Or the history of abstract art—because Raoul De Keyser is a painter’s painter, someone who influenced and shaped a generation of artists, someone whose works were done purely for art sake and out of necessity to create them. Do you have to like them or to understand them? No. But if you curious and want to widen your art horizons—go see it.
Exhibition period: 5.07–6.08.22
