I love the quote by Diane Arbus herself that her works capture ”the space between who someone is and who they think they are”.
The wild mixture of subjects that was captured by Diane Arbus rhymes with the split opinions and mixed reactions to her oeuvre. Provocative, inspiring, cynical, humanistic, disturbing, gentle, brutal, and disgusting were among numerous opinions expressed by not only common public but fellow photographers and art critics. No matter whether her works are still seen as infuriating she was undoubtedly one of the most influential photographers.
