Phénix Varbanov: Time Passes/Art Remains at Pékin Fine Arts
To be honest I have a rather strong opinion about the phrase “East meets West”. Not only because it is so trite and banal, but also because it doesn’t actually explain anything but instead raises even more questions:
Where did they meet? Was the meeting fruitful? And what are exactly the East and the West we are talking about?
So I will very much prefer to pay attention to the mutual influence of—in this case—Traditional Chinese ink art and materials and of some Western color preferences and approach to abstraction. Proudly holding mixed identity—Chinese, Bulgarian and French—Phénix is mixing techniques and practices effortlessly and n.
This exhibition absolutely can be seen on its own but it is inherently related to the Madame Song exhibition at M+, since Phénix happens to be the son of Madame Song-Huai-Kuei. You can try to trace and discover some influences.
Exhibition period: 28.07–30.09
