Tony Lewis: New Song We Wrest! Who Throng Heat Yet? Tone Got Flower Work at Massimo de Carlo

I love the irony of Tony Lewis artworks: the seemingly abstract forms are in fact the stenographic script, so anyone who knows Gregg shorthand can technically read it. But the obviously readable letters and titles of paintings don’t actually reveal anything exact, so the understanding is purely an illusion. Pre-linguistic marking and graffiti tags, pareidolia and blindspots, hidden messages and spontaneous storytelling—the way humans interact with languages and signs is fascinating.
(Mysterious exhibition’s name is a result of mixing together titles of the artworks; seems like a good idea for every artist or curator struggling with naming)

Exhibition period: 11.05—30.06
Gallery address: Shop 03-205 & 206, Tai Kwun, Central
