Howardena Pindell: Deep Sea, Deep Space at White Cube
The recurring motif of a circle is rooted in the use of circular markings on the utensils designated for Black customers during the racial segregation period in the US.
To reclaim the circle and also to employ a mundane office tool—the hole puncher—she used the paper “confetti” as an art material. Layered on the canvas and covered in spray paint, the circles look like luxurious embroidery or lush vegetation seen from above. The use of the circle continues in the Tesseract as a dot, a mark, and the association with aerial photography gets even more pronounced.
