Tony Bevan: Epistrophies and Heads at Ben Brown Fine Arts
(In case your rhetoric classes were a tad too long ago and you need some reminder) Epistrophe is a figure of speech, a repetition of a word or a phrase, used to emphasize or create a certain rhythm and feeling. The angular, broken line, repeatedly used in creating these two series of paintings, can be poetically called a visual epistrophe.
Also the shape and the movement of this line reminded me of a classic quote by Edward R. Harrison: “Hydrogen is a light, odorless gas, which, given enough time, turns into people”. Can the line, repeated enough over a certain amount of time, turn into trees or human heads?
