Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to present “Strait is the Gate,” a two-person show by Yasmine Anlan Huang and Lean Lui at the Institut's Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio from September 26 to October 26, 2024.
"What is something that is utterly hopeless, yet can forever remain in one's heart?" Inheriting André Gide's inward questioning, the juxtaposition of dreamy yet fragile metaphors and traces of violence often take center stage in the narratives of Lui and Huang. Exemplifying an approach influenced by Daoism, Lui’s signature visual style comprises exaggerated close-up shots and meticulously arranged mundane objects. Meanwhile, Huang employs a similarly delicate method, drawing inspiration from global news and poetic verses to unveil the interplay of geopolitical conflicts and urban anxieties. Through the portrayal of ethereal yet emotionally enigmatic young girls, the two artists examine pre-existing power structures and the stereotypical perception of vulnerability, invoking a pursuit of themes such as truth and courage in everyday life.
