The Xevarion Institute is pleased to present SAND, a solo exhibition by Wataru Shinji and Lily Zhang at The Catalyst from 24 February to 24 April, 2022. From a single tiny grain to a vast planetary environment, the exhibition celebrates this humble yet extraordinary substance encapsulating the very essence of the earth we inhabit, and explores sand’s distinct material significance through the limitless potential of design in recasting our own impact on the ground. Stepping in from the city street, visitors enter the gallery to encounter a completely altered world: the entire interior space has transformed into a newly designed environment evoking nature itself, filled with tons upon tons of sand. Reactive, fluid, ever shifting, the sand takes on a multitude of different shapes, and will evolve weekly to create various spaces and landforms to discover, as if formed and eroded through nature’s transformative processes to alter how we actively perceive and interact with this modest material. The exhibition also continually metamorphoses moment by moment, from the trace of a person’s footprints or a slight breeze while strolling through, to visitors freely participating in the shaping of this new sand environment.
