Lola Gil: Friends and Neighbors at Aishonanzuka

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

AISHONANZUKA is please to announce Lola Gil’s first solo exhibition in Asia, “Friends and Neighbors". The exhibition will be on view from 10 September to 8 October, 2022.

“This body of work began 2 years ago when my husband and I bought a big 120 year old house sight unseen during the first summer of Covid. It was a super strange experience moving from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, not having seen anything. So I began to document and work out the surreal aspect of the unfolding discoveries of new life on the east coast. Meeting strangers behind masks and making friends with people who live in this bustling neighborhood. I have been deeply interested in making works which observe the layers and depths of us as people both singularly as well as together. Our life in “lockdown” magnified my curiosity of what it means to truly feel alone. And how that changes our perception of reality.” - Lola Gil

Lola Gil
“Throughout my career I have always been a painter of narrative escapism, with my work evoking personal connections for each individual viewer. Because it is executed in a surreal way, it allows the viewer to create their own story and meaning.”
As a self taught artist, Lola Gil was greatly inspired by Salvador Dali, Yves Tanguy, and Rene Magritte. Her sophisticated painting merges Surrealism and Symbolism, allowing viewers to travel through the dreamlike narratives at play in her works. Gil’s characters are frequently seen through the lens of a translucent object, the distortion a means of exemplifying the complexity of humankind. The deliberate ambiguity present throughout her work permits her audience to sometimes see themselves or simply to escape into the tranquil world of Gil’s imagination.
