An inner dialogue with roots, values & identity. The distinctive journey of the nomadic duo inspired the exhibition title — ‘Roots’: The lacquer master, Wensen Qi represents the “uprooted”, leaving his hometown in France and moved to China to decipher the secrets of lacquer. Lee Man Sang, a quiet wanderer who return to his roots after 15 years, alienated from the cityscape and devoting in his creation at a tranquil village in Hong Kong. Both artists’ surreal displacements in the dynamic cities symbolises the sense of magical realism, their artworks become part of the fabric of normalcy, interspersed throughout everyday real life. The artists challenges the definition of ‘roots’. Roots are not born of nature but made and crafted by the human mind. It is shaped by the values, principles and core spirituality that make us who we are.
