Group Exhibition "a Time" at AVA Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

This is the first Ceramics exhibition presented as a retrospective and related to happenings from the Academy of Visual Arts, since its establishment 16 years ago.

It presents 37 exhibitors, including 32 alumni and 5 teaching staff, who have continued their artistic practice within ceramics.

‘a Time’ is the theme of this exhibition. It indicates the life of clay; as time passes, earth sinks and precipitates. It collects various minerals and elements through sedimentation, and shows specific characteristics at different regions. It can be interpreted as “sometimes”, “once in a while” or reference a non-specific time frame, perhaps as a glimpse into an artist’s thoughts. In Ecclesiastes in the Bible it states, “A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted”, referring our demeanour towards the inconstancy and the unknown in our life, the reservation of the past, the affirmation of the present, and the aspiration towards the future.

Ceramicists manifest their imagination through the formation of clay. In this exhibition, the exhibitors attempt to articulate their interpretation and perception and open up a dialogue about ‘time’ through their creations with clay. This exhibition represents a reflection of the past, a snapshot of a moment, and an interpretation of when a decision is made.
