One of HK's most prominent calligraphy and ink painting artists of his generation, Chui Pui Chee is known for his innovative, expressive works that are deeply rooted in the tradition of Chinese literati paintings, especially his landscapes.
The series “Nine Abysses” is different from his previous works. It delves deeply into the traditional ink-and-wash genre, and demonstrates his superb skills in reinterpreting the style of Song Dynasty, the works emphasise the use of dark ink to depict valleys, rocks, pine trees and other elements in nature that are common motifs in ancient Chinese landscape paintings.
The latest addition to the series, “Nine Abysses Ancient Melody”, is comprised of sixteen new works in total. By combining ancient grace and contemporary aesthetics, the works underline Chui’s exquisite skills. The unique use of colour tunes up the hazy atmosphere in a conspicuous but euphemistic way.
