Vittoria Chierici: The Philosophers’ Clothes at Rossi&Rossi
What may seem to be a number of abstract paintings is actually a thorough study of The School of Athens by Raphael. These works remind me both of pages from a sketchbook and separate layers of an image in a drawing app. Gradually reduced to just tunics the greatest philosophers are still immediately recognised because of the masterfully reproduced spatial arrangement and use of colours.
It’s almost impossible not to go into philosophical musing about human tendency to simplify and reduce complex ideas into much easier to understand shapes and forms, and I find great irony in remembering what some of these philosophers were saying about art and mimesis (yes Plato, I am looking specifically at you) and seeing them being represented just by several brushstrokes.
