Joan Miró—The Poetry of Everyday Life at HKMoA
More of a thematic showcase than retrospective, the exhibition is directly related to its title. Proud Catalan, Joan Miró eagerly used for his works not just ordinary objects, but the objects specific for Catalan culture and traditions. He dealt with materiality and form of such objects, mixing the literal and symbolic meanings, playing with forms, ennoble some of them by recreating in materials like bronze. throughout his career Joan Miró developed incredibly rich visual lexicon and vocabulary but managed to keep it not only intuitive but flexible and open to co-creation in relation to viewers own experience.
Inspired by richness and complexity of everyday life around him and then presenting it as a condensed simplification and distilled essence Joan Miró is still one of the most inspiring and resonating artists.
In a response to showcased works by Joan Miró two prominent Hong Kong artists GayBird and Leelee Chan have created their artworks, contemplating on a poetry of mundane objects or something as simple—yet as fascinating—as a bird flight.
Special thanks to the director of Barcelona’s Fundació Joan Miró, Dr Marko Daniel for the marvelous tour.
