Daphné Mandel: Their Memories at Gallery Exit

Daphné Mandel: Their Memories at Gallery Exit

Poignant, delicate and poetic exhibition that captures not only the disappearing Hong Kong but also reminding viewers of the fleeting nature of human life. The immediate recognition of the photographs that Daphné found in the abandoned villages is touching and resonant — each of our families has similar, if not identical, snapshots. Someone’s vacations, weddings, graduations, parties, family events — purely personal moments, both unique and universal, captured to preserve. Ironically these quintessentially personal artifacts are losing their personality once there is no longer anyone to tell the story. People depicted there can still be alive, but these photographs are no longer an active part of their lives. Now they are merely evidence of existence, slowly turning into an array of fading memories.
