Dami Kim: The Stories We Tell Ourselves at Odds and Ends
Most of the paintings that served as inspiration and starting point for Dami Kim artworks are classical allegorical or historical paintings. I find it quite amusing that depending on your prior knowledge you either immediately recognize them or you just see abstracted figures and an ambiguous composition. The stories seen by viewers differ greatly: you may remember paintings by Pompeo Girolamo Batoni, Corrado Giaquinto, Theodore Gericault, “recreate” a painting using your imagination — or you can just see Dami’s artworks as they are.
(Also let’s be honest: how often do we really recognize allegorical Justice and Peace in pompous and monumental paintings? Might as well blur, simplify and abstract them to just a number of brushstrokes)
