Shen Chen at Axel Vervoordt Gallery

That’s one of those shows when you really wish a gallery would have a chair in front of every painting. They were definitely not made in a rush so it’s just logical to spend some time with them. Beautiful washes of diluted paint are put in thin layers, making the slow process of building the colour and creating gradation visible and almost physical. Shen Chen was greatly influenced by action paintings and is following that path, turning his works into a recording of time, documentation of gestures in his own, slow and meditative way. And as usual — for such paintings — photos absolutely don’t do them justice.
